Imagine running up more than $250 in Peach Pass fines -- only to find out months later.
It’s already happened to at least one person and the State Road and Tollway Authority says there could be thousands of others.
Amy Bretherton tells WSB she and her husband replaced their Wildlife tag for a regular license plate to save money.
"I didn't realize that it would affect my Peach Pass. So at the end of August, we changed the plates and as I started going back and forth through the toll booth, I was racking up fines but was unaware of it,” said Bretherton.
Bretherton says she wasn't notified of the violation for several months.
"Right before Christmas, I get my first letter showing fines that occurred September 15th through October 20th. They said I owed $25 for each violation and 50 cents for the toll," said Bretherton.
Bretherton’s fine total so far is $255. She says once she was notified, she immediately called SRTA.
"And I asked, why did it take two-and-a-half months to get the first notice because as soon as I got a letter, I called up to take care of the problem," said Bretherton.
She says she was stunned with the answer.
"She said, we're changing over our systems and we didn't send out any letters to anyone for two months. Just be glad that you only owe us a couple of hundred dollars. Hundreds of people owe us thousands of dollars now," said the woman.
She did appeal, but her appeal was denied. Malika Reed Wilkins, Director of SRTA's Marketing and Communications, said the delays in processing are because of the extra level of diligence it takes to check the accuracy of the violations.
SRTA has since said they would reduce each of Bretherton's fines from $25 to $5.
