Health concerns over the coronavirus pandemic have now claimed a north Georgia fall tradition. The city of Helen announced it has postponed its annual Oktoberfest until 2021.

“This has been an extremely difficult decision,” wrote the Greater Helen Area Chamber of Commerce in a statement. “No one could have imagined a situation that would cause us to cancel the Festhalle celebrations for our 50th Anniversary, and all options were looked at prior to reaching our decision.”

The city says its Festhalle is considered a Live Performance Event facility under the guidelines set forth by the governor’s office for COVID-19 response/reopening. The challenge of health safety of the venue was a driver in the postponement.

Helen Chamber officials say its businesses remain open to welcome visitors, and hope “other celebrations can safely continue.”
