The postman may finally give Sandy Springs residents their due.
The U.S. Postal Service says if residents agree to the change, they’ll designate at least seven ZIP codes to Sandy Springs, not the city of Atlanta.
If a majority of Sandy Springs homeowners and businesses vote yes in a survey, the Postal Services will change the ZIPs of 30319, 30327, 30328, 30338, 30339, 30342 and 30350 from Atlanta to Sandy Springs. Post office boxes in ZIP codes 30358, 31150 and 31156 also could see a change in cities.
"I think (postal officials) realized the equity of the situation. It turns out we're not the only jurisdiction in the United States that's had this problem," Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos said.
The new ZIP codes will save residents money who shop online. Atlanta ZIPs are charged 8 percent sales tax. It’s 7 percent in Sandy Springs.
"I'm retired and trying to watch what I spend,” Sandy Springs resident Charles Salter told Channel 2. “That's a valid point that all of us need to be conscious of."
Postal officials also will require the city to hold public hearings and set up a hotline for residents with questions.
The City Council is expected to take up the issue Tuesday.
