Jacksonville’s Jamal Agnew ties NFL record with 109-yard return for TD

The play came just before halftime at TIAA Stadium. Arizona Cardinals kicker Matt Prater attempted a 68-yard field goal with two seconds to go, NFL.com reported. Agnew caught the ball just short of the end line, cut left, dodged a few tackles and outran the Cardinals’ special teams unit down the sideline for the score.

That gave the Jaguars a 13-7 halftime lead, but the Cardinals recovered to win 31-19.

Agnew’s return matched those of San Diego’s Cordarrelle Patterson, who returned a kickoff in 2013 at the end of the second half of a 7-7 game against the Minnesota Vikings, according to The Sporting News. Antonio Cromartie ran back a kick against Green Bay in a “Sunday Night Football” game in 2007, the magazine reported.

Agnew also had a 102-yard kickoff return in Week 2, ESPN reported. He becomes the ninth player in NFL history with multiple 100-yard returns in the same season. Patterson was the last to do it achieving it in 2013.

It turned out to be an unlucky day for Prater. He entered the day with the NFL record for the longest field goal at 64 yards, set in 2013. But Baltimore Ravens’ kicker Justin Tucker kicked a 66-yard field goal to beat Detroit and erase Prater’s mark.
