JetBlue plane tips backward as passengers exit aircraft at JFK Airport in NYC

Officials said a shift in weight and balance as people exited the aircraft caused the tilt.

Flight 662 had just landed at the airport from Bridgetown, Barbados at about 8:30 p.m. EDT, WABC-TV reported.

Officials with the air carrier said the plane tipped backward at about a 30-degree angle because of a shift in weight and balance as people exited the aircraft, according to the television station.

“It felt like the plane was about to do a backflip,” passenger Sinead Bovell told WCBS-TV. “Everybody kind of screamed and was grabbing for seats. Anybody who was standing was grabbing for seats.”

Videos posted to social media showed the scary incident, according to The Associated Press.

Laura Einsetler, a commercial airline pilot, told WCBS that crews usually unload cargo from the rear of the plane as passengers exit from the front.

“In this case, what happened, everything came off the front half of the airline and so it was a tail tip like that,” Einsetler told the television station.

A JetBlue spokesperson said in a statement on Monday that the plane was removed from service to be inspected, WABC reported.

“Once at the gate, due to a shift in weight and balance during deplaning, the tail of the aircraft tipped backward, causing the nose of the aircraft to lift up and eventually return back down. No injuries were reported,” the spokesperson said. “Safety is JetBlue’s first priority; we are reviewing this incident.”
