LONDON — Actor Stephen Fry and former England soccer manager Gareth Southgate will be knighted by King Charles III as the New Year Honors list was released on Monday.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan and former West Midlands Mayor Andy Street were also awarded knighthoods, the BBC reported.

At the end of each year, the reigning British monarch names new members of the United Kingdom’s orders of chivalry, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That includes knights, dames, and commanders of the British Empire (CBE), officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), and members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) and other honors.

Keely Hodgkinson, who won a gold medal in the 800 meters in track and field at the 2024 Paris Olympics, will receive an MBE from the king, the BBC reported. Tom Baker (“Doctor Who”) will also receive an MBE.

Other notable names on the 2025 list include musician Myleene Klass; gardener Alan Titchmarsh; actresses Carey Mulligan (”Maestro”), Sarah Lancashire (”Happy Valley”) and Anne Marie Duff (”Bad Sisters”); and actors Eddie Marsan (”Supacell”) and Kevin Whately (”Inspector Morse”), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Mulligan and Lancashire were among the people named CBEs for their contributions to drama. Meanwhile, Duff, Marsan, and Whately received OBE honors.

Fry, 67, was honored for his work on mental health awareness and the environment.

“I think the most emotional thing is when I think of my childhood, and my dreadful unhappiness and misery and stupidity, and everything that led to so many failures as a child,” he said, according to the BBC. “And for my parents, really, what a disaster. I mean every time the phone rang, they thought, ‘Oh God, what has Stephen done now.’ It was a sort of joke in the family.”

Southgate, 54, guided England’s soccer team to back-to-back runner-up finishes at the European Championship and the 2018 World Cup semifinals during his eight years in charge, The Guardian reported.

He becomes only the fourth former England manager to be knighted, following Alf Ramsey, Walter Winterbottom and Bobby Robson, according to the newspaper.
