LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. — A sheriff’s deputy in California has been shot and killed in the line of duty, officials say. A suspect is also reportedly in custody.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Office on Twitter Friday afternoon confirmed that a deputy was shot and said that the officer was taken to an area hospital. where he later died from his injuries.

The sheriff’s office on Twitter identified him as Deputy Darnell Calhoun, who died in the line of duty,

The suspect is in custody, according to Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.

Update 6:34 p.m. EST Jan 14: The suspect was identified Saturday afternoon as Jesse Navarro, 42, according to the Orange County Register.

Calhoun had responded to the 1800 block of Hilldale Lane around 4:20 p.m. on Friday for unknown trouble. As Calhoun arrived at the house, Navarro allegedly shot him, according to the Orange County Register. A second deputy arrived at the house and got in a “gun battle” with Navarro, injuring him critically.

Original report: The Associated Press reported that the shooting occurred in the city of Lake Elsinore, which is about 55 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

The shooting happened about two weeks after another Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy, Isaiah Cordero, was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Jurupa Valley, according to KTLA. The suspect died after a pursuit that led to a shootout with law enforcement.

According to KTTV, officials have not released any information about what led up to the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information has been released.
