Jessica Springsteen, daughter of rock ‘n’ roll legend Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa, was part of the U.S. equestrian team that took a silver medal in the Tokyo Games on Saturday.
The U.S. squad lost to Sweden in a jump-off Saturday night, but the team still won their record 10th medal in the event. Jessica Springsteen teamed with Laura Kraut and McLain Ward to take the silver, CNN reported.
Ward was the gold medalist in the event in 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics, while Kraut was a gold medalist in 2008, according to The Sporting News. Springsteen shared the medal with her horse, Don Juan Van De Donkhoeve, the publication reported.
“I had really high hopes coming in today,” Jessica Springsteen told reporters. “It really gave me a lot of confidence and the ability to have big dreams of riding with them so, I’m just so excited.”
During Saturday’s primary round, Springsteen and Ward each clipped one rail, leaving the U.S. team tied with Sweden for the top spot with eight penalty points, according to The Associated Press.
“I was disappointed to have the four faults,” Springsteen said before the jump-off, according to The New York Times. “But I thought my horse jumped the rest of the course absolutely beautifully.”
“I was happy we were able to pull it together and fight for the rest of the course.”
In the jump-off, the Americans had a combined time of 124.2 seconds. Peder Fredericson, the last rider from Sweden, needed to finish in 40.30 seconds or better without an error to win gold for her team, the AP reported. She finished flawlessly in 39.01 seconds to give the Swedes their record fourth gold medal in the event but the first since 1924.
Springsteen said she called her family after winning the medal.
“I FaceTimed them really quick. They were all screaming, I don’t think we understood anything,” Springsteen told CNN. “Just saw their Team USA gear. there was just lots of shouting. I couldn’t make a lot out but I know that they’re so excited.”
