Neal Boortz signed with WSB in 1993 and was soon named “One of the Most Important” radio hosts in the nation. Clark Howard’s local consumer-advocacy program was also syndicated starting in 1998, and it is now carried on more than 200 stations. “Atlanta’s Morning News” host Scott Slade has won two Marconi Awards as “Major Market Personality of the Year”, and Kirk Mellish was—and remains Atlanta radio’s only full-time meteorologist. Boortz and the WSB news team were on the air the morning of September 11, 2001, when terrorists struck the United States, with Boortz announcing bluntly “We are under attack”.

The radio industry in the early 2000s fell into its iffiest period since the 1950s, with the development of the internet and satellite radio. Yet WSB remains a vital, competitive utility for the Atlanta metro. Talk host Herman Cain used his WSB exposure as a springboard for a presidential run. The nearly-unprecedented addition of an FM simulcast in August, 2010 boosted the station’s reach, and the 50,000- watt AM signal also continues to beam what’s now known as “AM 750 and now 95.5 FM, NewsTalk WSB” to what is, by some measures, the largest news-talk audience in the country.
