Q: We’re installing a pool! What are some ornamental grasses and or tropical plants you’d recommend?

A: Ornamental grasses are a great choice! All they need is well-draining soil and full sun, and they’re good to go! With so many different colors and textures, there’s sure to be a variety to choose from. From left to right, some really fun, colorful plants pictured are purple fountain grass, pink muhly grass (one of my favorites!) and Japanese forest grass (Beni-kaze variety).

For a fast-growing, tall grass that could potentially provide some privacy, consider miscanthus. Much of metro-Atlanta can handle perennial tropicals, like canna lilies, elephant ears and Mexican petunias! Good for large pots around the pool are croton, pineapple and some palms. But plan to bring these in every winter.
