Georgia football coach Kirby Smart and team celebrate championship season at Sanford Stadium

ATHENS — Georgia coach Kirby Smart looked around Sanford Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Bulldogs fans packing the stands in red and black to celebrate a championship, and shared a memory.

Yes, Smart acknowledged, there were plenty of memories from Georgia’s domination at Sanford Stadium this season.

The Bulldogs outscored their six opponents on Dooley Field in Athens by a 262-46 count on the path to beating Alabama last Monday at Lucas Oil Stadium to win the program’s first national championship since 1980.

“What you 95,000 people don’t get to see is how these guys were here at 6 a.m. about a year ago at this time, sweating with blood and tears,” Smart said, referring to how the team changed up its conditioning program to include runs up and down the stadium steps.

“Before we came out today the first thing these guys were thinking about was how much work they did in the stadium in the mornings.”
