The NFL, in an unprecedented move, has suspended New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton for one year over the scandal resulting from the bounty program the team had in place from 2009 to 2011.

The Saints have also been fined $500,000 and will lose two second round picks over the next two drafts.

Payton was not the only one who felt the wrath of the league.

General manager Mickey Loomis was suspended for the first eight regular-season games, assistant coach Joe Vitt gets six games and is fined $100,000.

The suspensions for Payton, Loomis and Vitt are without pay.

In addition, then defense coordinator Gregg Williams, who was the center point of the investigation, has been suspended indefinitely.  Williams was to begin his first season as defense coordinator of the Rams.

"We are all accountable and responsible for player health and safety and the integrity of the game," Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "We will not tolerate conduct or a culture that undermines those priorities. No one is above the game or the rules that govern it. Respect for the game and the people who participate in it will not be compromised. “

Payton's suspension is effective April 1.  NFL Goodell will meet with Williams after this coming season and determine the coach's status.
