Atlanta pollen count hits record high

The first day of spring blooms a new record pollen count today.  Officials say it's up more than 1,200 points over Monday.

The Atlanta Allergy & Asthma Clinic says Tuesday's pollen count of 9,369, shattered Monday's record level of 8,164.

Beech, birch, oak, pine and grass are the ones floating around right now.

Dick Wooley, who has lived in Cobb County for years, tells Channel 2 Action News he's never experienced anything like it.

"I've lived here, you know, since 1951, and never had a problem before with it, so this is the worst I've ever seen it," said Wooley.

Pharmacist Ira Katz, who has worked in Little Five Points for more than 30 years, says he's never seen such a run on allergy medication.

"It seem like probably 60 to 70 percent of what we're selling today is allergy-related," said Katz.

"I actually refer to Atlanta as the allergy capitol of the galaxy," said Katz.

Not much relief in sight, WSB Meteorologist Kirk Mellish very little chance of rain until Thursday, when the chances are only 30 percent; chances go up to 50 percent Friday.

This week's pollen counts are well above the old record of 6,013, which dates to April 12, 1999.  Last year, the highest pollen count measured was 3,939 on March 24.
