Severe storms move out but heavy rain still causing problems across metro Atlanta

ATLANTA — A line of severe storms is moving through metro Atlanta and is likely to produce damaging wind gusts, lightning. Hail and brief, isolated tornadoes can’t be ruled out

The storm had already spawned one tornado in Bainbridge in southwest Georgia earlier Wednesday.

Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns has been tracking the severe storms throughout Wednesday night.

Burns says the severe weather risk for parts of northwest Georgia is a Level 3 out of 5. All of metro Atlanta is under Level 2 for severe weather.

Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Dawson, Forsyth, Fulton, Lumpkin, Paulding and Pickens counties until 12:00am.

Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Floyd, Paulding and Polk County until 11:15pm.

Tornado warning issued for Cleburne County, Alabama, which is in the Channel 2 Action News viewing area.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp issued a statement on Twitter urging everyone to take precautions ahead of the storms.

  • The main risks are damaging wind gusts and heavy rain.
  • Hail and brief, isolated tornadoes can’t be ruled out.
  • First round of rain moves out Wednesday afternoon after lunchtime.
  • Second round of strong to severe storms moves in Wednesday between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. It will last into Thursday morning.
