The first week of December marked a period of cold and dry weather for Metro Atlanta, but rain showers return to the region for the next few days.

The animation below illustrates the Futurecast upper level wind pattern, with a short-wave trough moving through North Georgia today.

This short-wave trough is responsible for generating the heavy rain showers experienced during the Monday morning commute, and it will continue to spark up more rain showers through the course of today.

The short-wave trough is then followed by a long-wave trough, and this trough axis stretches from the Great Lakes into Louisiana.

The long-wave trough will be responsible for generating additional rain showers, some of which will be heavy at times tonight through Wednesday morning.

The animation below illustrates the Futurecast Radar Imagery through Wednesday morning.

Rainfall totals will range between 2 to 3 inches across Metro Atlanta, with locally higher rainfall possible where heavier downpours move over the same region in a short amount of time.

This rainfall is certainly welcomed, as drought conditions prevail over North Georgia -- including Moderate Drought (D1) conditions over northeast Metro Atlanta.
