Happy New Year’s Eve! The weather here in Metro Atlanta will remain fairly quiet, though wind gusts as high as 30 mph will occur through the afternoon. Afternoon temperatures will reach the low 60s.
Midnight conditions will feature partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid 40s. The breezy will still be as high as 20 mph, so “wind chills” in the upper 30s may be a factor for anyone celebrating outdoors.
Beyond the holiday, get ready for some frigid air!
This weekend, morning lows will drop into the 20s, and afternoon highs will be limited to the 40s.
The pattern is setting up for bitterly cold air to move into the Southeast next week (Jan 6-12), with temps trending 20 degrees below average (highs in the 30s, lows in the upper 10s to low 20s).
There is high confidence that abnormally cold temperatures will arrive by January 4 and continue through the following weekend.
There is low confidence on wintry precipitation of any kind making its way into Metro Atlanta and North Georgia.
Note: The chance is low, but not zero!
I am monitoring any low pressure systems that have the potential to produce precipitation during the January 6-12 time frame.
But frozen precipitation forecasting in the South is VERY unreliable until about 5 days out. You need both the cold AND the moisture -- usually we run out of moisture, or the cold doesn’t show up in time and it’s a miserable 38 degree rain.
Even on New Year’s Eve, it is simply too early to determine if, when, and where it will snow during the week of January 6-12.
The time to monitor the potential for wintry precipitation is January 4, THAT’S the time to get excited about the four-letter-S-word, if it even presents itself!
Until then...
Cheers, and Happy New Year!
